A Guidebook to Furthering Yourself

After failing on numerous occasions, I have discovered ways that could prevent others from making the same mistakes I did. First of all, I would encourage others to branch out of their comfort zone and meet new people. I often hear that it is not about what you know, but about who you know. Make an attempt to attend events where business professionals will be in attendance. These types of events serve as fantastic networking opportunities to get your name out there and meet people who can help you in your endeavors.

Secondly, never quit learning. Yes, you will go to class and learn valuable knowledge but that is only for an extended period of time. Make an effort to increase your knowledge outside of the classroom to differentiate yourself from your peers. I personally recommend reading books or watching videos on topics that are most interesting to you. Reading will enhance your thinking capacity, vocabulary, and writing capabilities. It is said that if you read one book every month for five years on the same topic then you will be as knowledgeable as an expert in that field.

Many people ask what classes and what teachers they should choose. There are two types of students: 1) the student that takes the easiest classes and teachers in order to get through college the quickest, and 2) the student that takes the hardest classes and teachers in order to learn as much as possible. I definitely suggest being the ladder student, who strives to increase his or her knowledge by pushing themselves past their limits. Yes, the hardest classes and teachers will be difficult, but you will learn much more than other students. This will help you to stand out amongst the competition when applying for jobs.

The last piece of advice I would give someone is to never stop progressing. Many people become content with their lives and stop trying to improve themselves. This is often due to the lack of writing out short- and long-term goals. People must realize that we cannot go anywhere without knowing the end destination. Writing down goals keeps individuals accountable for their daily actions and gives them the opportunity to reach a level of satisfaction when they begin to accomplish their goals.
